Computer science was a very lucrative career back in the early days of the internet. We see the Mark Zuckerburgs, the Bil Gates of today and regret why we were not born in the same era as them. Now, in 2022, Is computer science still a good career? well, that's up for debate. First, let's discuss what computer science is and then discuss the other branches of computer science that you may also have to consider in choosing a career.
What is computer science?
It is the study of computers, how they compute data/information and theories of how best to compute that data. One might expect computer science to be only about computers but it is a vast field that takes or applies mathematics, engineering and logic principles. The field of computer science was started by mathematicians who thought the way computing works and algorithm formation, automation etc is vast and deserves its own name or field.
What job can you get in computer science?
As you would expect, computer science experts are/were in demand. And there is a lot a computer science degree holders can do. Let's look at the top jobs a computer science person can do:
1. Software developer
Software developers create software. And software is a general term for anything that runs on code. You can be a web developer, an app developer, a game developer, or an enterprise desktop software developer.
2. Computer engineer (Hardware)
Computer engineers are responsible for designing, developing and testing hard components such as network equipment like routers, repeaters, and servers. Any hardware component you can think of was designed and developed by computer engineers. If you enjoy working with hardware then this is the best field for you.
3. Computer networks engineer.
These guys are responsible for maintaining data communication systems. Configuring networks and working sure everyone is connected to the network and the network is efficient enough.
Other branches of computer science
Since its inception, computer science has now developed branches. And one can argue some of these branches are way more attractive than a computer science degree. Let's look at them.
1. Software Engineering
It is a branch of computer science that focuses on the design, development and testing of computer programs. Software engineers are tasked with transforming a client's idea, or requirements into a fully functioning program.
2. Data Science
It's another branch of computer science that deals with data and information. It's the study of ways or scientific processes and algorithms for extracting insights from seemingly random data.
3. Artificial Intelligence
This is the study of clever computer automation. Giving computers the ability to reason and make decisions given a set of inputs or scenarios. The popular application of artificial intelligence is in robots.
Is computer science a good career?
In short, computer science is a very interesting and good career. You can make a lot of money after you graduate. However, it's now a crowded field. But some of its branches like artificial intelligence and data science are still new, especially in Africa. So you may also have to consider those first before you go into computer science.
